From Sketch to Embroidery - Bicycle

Portland Oregon is listed as one of the top 10 states with the highest amount of bicyclist in a city. That is quite an honor since there are so many thousands of cities. I already knew there were a lot of cyclist in the Portland but I never realized we were in the top 10 cities. WoW!!!

Inspired by the news and looking for embroideries that would appeal to both genders I thought I would design my own bike embroidery. I found neon pink and neon green thread and tested it out with those colors. I just love the neon pink bicycle.

This is the first bike we embroidered on a Kindle Fire case in neon green. This case seems to get a lot of attention out at the artist market.

From Sketch to Embroidery - Paw Print

I have always loved the paw print it is one of my favorite things. I love my puppies paws. They are so big when they are puppies and they grow into them. The paw print shows where they have walked in the yard leaving a track on prints in the water, mud or snow.

My paw print sketch is a very crude pencil sketch. I tried to simplify my puppies paw print to the simplest form. Embroideries are better that way for me right now.

Here is the example of the embroidery paw print after I digitized it as an machine embroidery design. I've been using this embroidery on paw towels and totes for a while now.

From Sketch to Embroidery - Orca

This is the Orca I sketched earlier this month. I drew the Orca from a picture of a live whale in the ocean. Of course, I didn't take the picture but it took a while to find one online that showed the whale from a full side view. The photo I used was taken by a professional driver taking pictures of Orcas in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California. After I drew the whale in a simple form, I transferred it to an embroidery design. The test embroidery is shown below.

Growing up in California was in no way lacking on things to do. I remember seeing my first killer whale when I was 6 years old. My school took us to Sea World as a field Trip. The whole class got to see Shamu jump in the air and get us all wet as the huge animal splashed back into the giant pool. I bought a Shamu stuffed animal with my spending money my parents gave me for the day.

From Sketch to Embroidery - Sheep

This is a very quick and simple sketch of a sheep from memory. As you can see I had a few problems with the drawing.

As you can see I made a few changes to the design. I changed the shape of the head and removed two of the four legs. I used a scallop design I created two years ago and shrunk it down to use it as the fluffy look in the outline. After spending quite a few ours on the design I finally got something that looked like a sheep.
Bah Bah Black Sheep!!!

From Sketch to Embroidery - Iris

I designed the iris from a picture of an iris I drew when I was in high school. The drawing has been on my wall in every apartment I have ever lived in. I made the 3D version of my embroidery from the drawing. I am experimenting with ribbon in this photo for the leaves and stem. I really like how the above photo turned out.

From Sketch to Embroidery. White Swan

White Swan is an embroidery that I recently designed. It was inspired by two things. One is Swarovski crystal company logo and the other a set of wedding champagne glasses with a swan etched into the glass.

This is my quick sketch of a swan I found in a pond by the restaurant we were eating at.

This is the completed White Swan design. I love how the wings came out against the fill flat stitch of the neck and tail.

White Swan is copyrighted material.
